Salim writes "Hello:

I solicit your help to help us resolve an offline replication issue.

Basically our customer has a number of branches running our ERP application. Some of the branches have no access to telephone lines and some the telephone lines are not reliable. We currently use merge replication to do the online replication when ever it is possible. We need a method whereby our customer can replicate to synchronize databases at headoffice and branches when ever they like using offline replication. This means a replicatable backup can be made at the branch (on CD or any media) and taken to headoffice for replication. Likewise headoffice data can be backed up to be replicated at branches.

What is required is to give us a complete solution whether based on our existing methodoligy of merge replication or a new one which in the end will meet our customer's requirement of achieving replication whether online or offline.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I think this kind of setup is very over demanding. You want to merge the Data at different Replicas which generally remain Offline for most of time and neither do they have reliable connection media to talk to the Main Server. Hummmmm......There can we workarounds to this but I am sure that will not be a clean solution ....You can use a staging Server (which is just near to your main Head Office Server) where you will populate the Data from different Branches through CD or (any other Media) and as this Staging Server can talk easily with your main Server and has sufficient and reliable Network Bandwidth/Connection , you can make these two Servers (Head Office Server and Staging Server) to Merge data among themselves using Merge Replication. Again just a simple Backup and Restore of the Data from your branches will not do, you need to populate the Data from the Backup files that you got from your Branches using some means like DTS Etc .........Yaa I know its kind of confusing at this point....

Keeping in mind your requirement of Merging Data across different Branches that too Offline does not look quite feasible to me unless you break your head on the workaround mentioned Above.

I would suggest to at least have a reliable connectivity across the Branches and the Server and keep using Merge Replication which consume very less of Network Resources.

May be somebody else can come up with a new Idea and help you out...
