when I import a flat file (5 Megabyte text file) to a table in my db, the db grows upto 20 megabytes in size? I have run the shrink utility can anyone give some insight on this?

Check out the database recovery model. Most likely you have it set to full. You might consider changing this to Bulk-Logged which will only minimally log the bulk operations. Check out books on line under the topic "recovery models" and read up on "selecting a recovery model" to see the ins and outs of each model and whether or not you should do this.
