Hi ..
I have a situation where i hv to decide whether to opt Merge Replication or Log Shipping.

Current Setup :
1)I have Location1(Prod DB) and Location2(Local Server) (SQL 2000 SP3a)
2)Location 1 is always be prime database. All users from Location 2 are accessing Prod DB from remote location.

Requirement :
1)I need to have all transactions to be replicated from Location1 to Location2.
2)So presently i have setup Transactional replication between these two servers. It is working fine.

Now, i am thinking of setting up MERGE REPLICATION between these two servers.

In case of failover of prod. server, i need to allow users at location2 to use db at Location2 as prime database.

Let me have expert you comments/experience u had with MERGE REPLICATION or Log Shipping..Which is convinient and requires less administration ? And what about performance.?

It just depends on what you want. If this is for disaster recovery, then the solution is log shipping. If it isn't, then replication is what you want. Both aren't very convenient. Replication can be troublesome to troubleshoot. Log shipping has its issues too.

We use log shipping for site duplication to our disaster recovery site. For one application, we also use replication for our reporting database.
