Replication (is the short answer).

Books online is a great start, take a look there.

How big are the databases?

Number of tables/columns
Size of the actual files

Do the databases have a good design?

Normalized?

How big of time window and how often do you need to update the central DB?

Do you need to also update the small DBs on a schedule with everything in the central DB?
