Hi all, just a quick question regarding the use of Replication or Log Shipping for a reporting Server option.I know very little about either, so please bear with me.I have been asked to come up with a reporting solution for a new platform we are building, and basically we will have a sql server (Live) and a reporting server (stand alone) which must be up 24/7, for fixed and adhoc reports.Having read a bit about log shipping I know that whilst the restore is being carried out no reports can be run against that DB, is that the case.If so maybe log shipping is not the right way to go, so that leaves replication.Which solution should I look into as there are three in replication?Cheers, and I hope the above makes sense. |

if it's a reporting server you should look into transforming or summarizing the data before it gets transferred to your reporting server and a dts package or a simple job calling an sp would do itotherwise... i advise transactional replication--------------------keeping it simple... |

Yes that is the case about log shipping. The same is true for any database that has a restore log occurring on it. The restores must have exclusive access to the database. We use transactional replication for our reporting database.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |
