I tried. I really did to adapt to using Management studio as a replacement, but I just can't make the jump. I went ahead and installed SQL 2000 QA and have gone back to using it for ad-hoc query support and other routine SQL tasks. For me the main thing is the "Notepad-esque" lightness of QA compared to the heavier SQL tools that allows me to quickly open a SQL script file and get to work on it quickly. I appreciate an integrated tool, but I would like to see future versions allow you to use it either as a standalone or within integrated platform. Am I alone in this? Anyone else feeling this pain?

I'm with you. I love sql management studio, but it is just too slow. Once it is open and loaded and connected and all that, it is not too bad, but QA just feels much zippier. having said that, I much prefer the way SSMS handles "queries" and has the tabs and all that, it is much better organized and overall a much better tool, but it is just a little sluggish....

I hate SSMS. Not only is it slower, but it is far too cluttered. Your workable area ends up being about 1/4 of your screen space.
It all comes from MS being lazy and trying to force-fit SQL Server management functionality into the .Net development environment.

about the cluttered issue, I just set all windows but the editor to auto hide. try clicking the little thumbtack on OE for example.

nothing to do about the slowness but throw hardware at it. more memory, more cpu. managed apps are hungry.

The auto-hide annoys me, because whenever my cursor strays over the border it pops back out again.

"It all comes from MS being lazy and trying to force-fit SQL Server management functionality into the .Net development environment."

I think its marketing driven. It makes SQL Server more attractive to non-database-people.

That leads to less skilled people getting in deep water and MS building things in the optimiser to try to cache dynamic SQL better.

Dunno if all that is good or bad, TBH, but I still use QA for queries on SQL 2005 ...
