I just recently replaced my old HP laptop with a Sony VAIO. I installed all of my development software on it, including SQL Server 2005 and the studio. At some point when I am using the studio on this new laptop, if I try to resize any of the columns to better fit the data, it crashes my laptop. I get the infamous Blue Screen of Death.

The laptop is a Sony Vaio BX670P and it has Win XP SP2 with all of the latest and greatest updates loaded on it.

The BSD blames a driver for causing the crash and points out "win32k.exe" specifically. This has never happened to me before.

Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Have you applied SP1 for sql 2005?

If so, report it as a bug to microsoft.

Yes, I have all available updates from the Microsoft Update web site. I also already have the most recent video drivers listed on the Sony web site for my machine model.

This problem continues to only happen with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. Also, it only occurs when I "Open Table". If I query a table manually using the "SELECT to" option, I can resize the columns all that I want to. However, if I resize any columns while working with a table that I opened using the "Open Table" option, the computer will crash. I have been able to go as far as resize 4 or 5 columns before it occurs again. Most often though, I only have to resize a single column.

Please Note: When I say "resize" a column, this only means that I use the mouse to show more or less information by dragging the column header left or right.

I keep allowing the error reporting program report the BSD dump to Microsoft when the laptop boots back up. Is this what you mean, or should I report it another way?

You could perhaps try here...

FYI...

I was able to report it on that site, but only after going through a registration process three times. That was annoying. :( Thank you for all of your help.

You should probably verify where the win32k.exe is located on your computer. There are a bunch of viruses that use win32k.exe as their program. Google had a bunch of links if you search for win32k.exe.

Hmmm... That file is not found on my local hard drives (it is a raid array). Also, I am running the enterprise version of Symantec Antivirus.

I just realized something. The filename is not "win32k.exe", it is "win32k.sys". Sorry about that. :(

I have a Dell D620 and I am having a similar problem. Almost every time I open a table, I get a BSOD. I can design etc with no problem but opening a table causes problems. It seems to be better if I stop moving the mouse until a few seconds after the table is displayed but this doesn't always help. I have updated SQL to SP1a, all my drivers are the latest and XP is at SP2 and the latest hotfixes. Anyone found a solution?

I have the same problem on my Dell Inspiron 9400. I expect it's got something to do with the Centrino Dual Core Processor. I also own a Inspiron 9300 and have no problems what so ever.
A complete clean install of XP without any other software installed produces the same BSOD. SQL 2005 SP2 does not solve the probem!!

I switched jobs, so I can no longer troubleshoot this specific problem, but the dual core processor makes since. I have not had this problem on any other system with the same set-up. The dual core processor was also a problem child for my Adobe CS 2 Suite. I had to get a patch from Adobe for the products to remain activated. Perhaps MS needs to release a similar update...

I am also experiencing the same problem, it only started happening past week after going 8 months without a single problem.

When ever I open a table it will randomly BSOD on me with win32k.sys, I also have an Inspiron 9400 however mine is not a duo.

Anyone able to resolve the problem?

I also have a Dell Inspiron 9400 duo.

Are you kidding?

SQL Server will consume every resource avaliable.

And you are wondering why you are have problems?

It's meant to work that way.

I've used SQL Server 2000 for well over a year on the same laptop with no problems whatsoever.

2005 functions well until I use 'open table' and drag a field to see the entire contents - it's not meant to work that way. Other than that single problem it's fine.

The exact same thing happens to me. I'm using an Inspiron 6400 laptop. I see a pattern emerging...

"It's not meant to work that way" is not an appropriate answer to any software problem. If the feature is there, make it work. Otherwise, leave it out. If a developer is using that as an answer, they need to seriously re-think why they are a developer in the first place. We support users of software. The software does not support them.

What is more interesting is that we all seem to be talking about workstations, but servers with multiple cores or processors are not experiencing the same issue. This must be a driver issue.

I would like to throw a me too into the mix. I'm pretty sure this is a new problem with a recent update to either a driver or maybe even SQL Server 2k5 itself. I can't pinpoint exactly when it started happening but it happens very reliably.

I have a Dell Lattitude D620. I wonder if a common thing among the various computers that are mentioned is similiar video cards? I have a Intel 945GM.
