Slightly tangential answer to your question:I do this:-- Comment in the SHOWPLAN to see the Query Plan, OR the STATISTICS to see the logical stats-- SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT ONGO-- SET STATISTICS IO ON; SET STATISTICS TIME ON-- ... put query here - e.g.:SELECT * FROM Northwind.dbo.ProductsSET STATISTICS IO OFF; SET STATISTICS TIME OFFGOSET SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT OFFGO
and using the STATISTICS stuff I work on getting the reported SCAN COUNT and LOGICAL READS as low as possible - ignoring the other figures, in the main.I tend to only use the SHOWPLAN to see what index, if any, is being used. Its probably a gross oversimplification, but it might get you problem solving on an 80:20 basis - but if you need to know the Nuts and Bolts for an MS Exam you'll need to read up more than this, of course.More details on what the various things here mean: http://www.sql-server-performance.com/statistics_io_time.aspKristen
