Can anyone provide a url that explains query plans and associated details of the features behind the "cost" button within sql enterprise manager and explain query plans ?

Slightly tangential answer to your question:

I do this:

-- Comment in the SHOWPLAN to see the Query Plan, OR the STATISTICS to see the logical stats
-- SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT ON
GO
-- SET STATISTICS IO ON; SET STATISTICS TIME ON

-- ... put query here - e.g.:

SELECT * FROM Northwind.dbo.Products

SET STATISTICS IO OFF; SET STATISTICS TIME OFF
GO
SET SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT OFF
GO

and using the STATISTICS stuff I work on getting the reported SCAN COUNT and LOGICAL READS as low as possible - ignoring the other figures, in the main.

I tend to only use the SHOWPLAN to see what index, if any, is being used.

Its probably a gross oversimplification, but it might get you problem solving on an 80:20 basis - but if you need to know the Nuts and Bolts for an MS Exam you'll need to read up more than this, of course.

Here are a few links you could try:

Actually, googleing will get you a long way on this one:
