I have an MSDE instance running on XP which has SP2 installed. I have set up the Firewall exceptions to allow the traffic to the appropriate TCP and UDP ports and all clients can connect.

I have an occassional problem where clients cannot connect. If I turn off the firewall they can connect. I then turn the firewall back on and they can still connect and everything will be fine for days. The problem then reoccurs and I have to turn off and then on the firewall again.

Any ideas?

Occasionally when firewall is ON ?
You need to configure the firewall for the port no that you used. The default port no is 1433.

Choice is an illusion, created between those with power, and those without.
Concordantly, while your first question may be the most pertinent, you may or may not realize it is also the most irrelevant

Yes, I get the problem when the firewall is on but only occassionally. The ports are configured and all the clients can access the server. Although nothing changes, the client will suddenly be unable to login. If I go to the server the ports are still configured correctly. If I switch off the firewall the users can obviously connect, and when I switch it back on they still are able to connect. But in a few days they will be unable to do so again although nothing has changed.

It seems that switching off and on the firewall refreshes some kind of information but I do not know what, or why users can normally connect and then occassionally cannot.
