when I do a free text search on one character with a space on either side I get:
Server: Msg 7619, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Execution of a full-text operation failed. A clause of the query contained only ignored words.

Any ideas on how I solve this one anyone?

and no, I'm not Japanese...

It's a noise word. That's the first time I've had to deal with that one. Guess I got to take it out the list now.

One thing though,

I have to edit the noise.eng file. But I can't because windows says it is in use.
This is on a live server, so I need to be sure on how to solve this.
If I stop the SQL Server Service, will that release the reference to the file so that I can edit it?

I would think that you SHOULD be able to stop the FTS, independant of stopping SQL server.
Only service not available therefore to the users would be FTS (indexing??)

The Indexing Service is not started.
There is no such thing as a FTS service to my knowladge.
This one has me stumped.

darn.
stopped sql server but that made not difference
in trying to work out what the problem is, I tried renaming the file. But it says there is a sharing violation, the file may be in use...
