Guys,
I ran into this today after a fellow developer created a new trigger. It is documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839523

Dropping the trigger of course alleviated the problem, but Id like to understand what was happening under the hood at the time.

I first noticed an increasing frequency of these errors in the Event Log:

ODBC: Msg 0, Level 19, State 1
SqlDumpExceptionHandler: Process 51 generated fatal exception c0000005
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. SQL Server is terminating this process.

These errors (around 12-15) were eventually followed by a shutdown of the database and caused a fail over of our cluster. I ended up tracing the login detailed in the Event Log and tracked it down to a procedure causing the trigger to fire.

But whats going on internally?!

Nathan, you will probably have to post on an MS forum and hope an engineer responds. Basically, the update caused a memory exception. There are quite a few memory related errors with TEXT and cursors fixed with SP4 if you read the release notes. Manipulation of text from a memory and physical storage perspective is completely different than other data operations in SQL Server.

Thanks D. most information I find on M$ says little about the problem; only points to upgrade SP3 -> SP4, which resolves the issue.

He doesn't mean looking at the MS site. He means to post your question where you know MS engineers read the questions. Such an example are the MS newsgroups.
