I have been tasked with training a new developer in SQL server. This guy is a recent college grad and has a no database experience but a little C programming experience. I have mentored quite a few people in T-SQL(thanks to many of you fine folks) but those people were intermediate programmers and they were already in the middle of coding something.

I'm not sure where to begin. Any ideas or suggestions?

1. teach him normalization
2. teach him set based thinking
3. teach him normalization
4. teach him sql syntax
5. quizz him
6. do some other stuff you like...

Part of spirit1's step 4 can be to have the new person do all example steps in BOL's:

Accessing and Changing Relational Data | Query Fundamentals
Accessing and Changing Relational Data | Advanced Query Concepts

You know cat, I think the best way to get your feet wet with a database is MS Access :S

If he has NO previous database experience at all. You can learn a lot playing with Access. Create a small relational database of 4 or 5 tables to start. It is simple, and would teach SQL basics.

I have a small VB App given to me by my teacher to practise SQL insert, update, delete and select statements if you want a copy let me know. it has two tables and a word doc describing basic sql functions.

I guess I should have pointed out that this developer has already installed SQL 2000 Dev Ed on his machine. We stay away from Access if we can help it.

I already started writing some SQL to demonstrate set processing VS cursor based processing. I've become so accustomed to thinking this way that it was more difficult to write the code the wrong way.

Xerxes, if cursors were nickels it would take you all year to find a parking spot!

Teach him what BOL is and how to use it. Tell him that he can ask any question he wants but he has to tell you what he found in BOL on that topic first.
