Bill writes "I'm writing a stored procedure, and I'd like to use the system stored procedure 'sp_columns' to tell me if a particular column exists in a particular table. So far, so good.

What I don't know how to do is to get the result set returned by sp_columns and do anything with it. How do I grab a hold of that result set, so that I can, for example, put it into a temporary table, or assign specific columns to temporary variables, etc.?

I think this is a general usage question, applicable to SQL 7.0 and SQL 2000."

You'll probably be a lot happier using the Information Schema views: http://www.sqlteam.com/item.asp?ItemID=13122
