| David writes "We have developed a generic audit system for MSQL databases. The interface is coded in ADO and runs from forms in a .mdb file and attachs (update, delete or insert) triggers to user defined tables, with audits written for user defined fields. This software works well and is widely used, but we wish to extend the functionality to force users to give a reason why they are updating particular fields or deleting records. However this would require code to be included in the relevant trigger, which would prompt the user for a reason at the time the trigger was fired. We can find no facility for including server side prompts in the trigger. Is is possible?Should we be looking at a different approach?" |

| No. It's not possible.Yes, you should find a different approach. This all sounds good, but triggers don't perform that well. Have you tested and published how much your application slows down the databases you are putting it on.?MeanOldDBAderrickleggett@hotmail.comWhen life gives you a lemon, fire the DBA. |
