Hi ,

We have a requirement to change the Hostname of our Server which has SQL Server 7.0 in it. It is a production database. Can someone help me with what is the impact if I change the Hostname.

This is possible, but takes a few steps.

First, rename the machine.

Then run SQL Server setup and choose upgrade. This should make all the necessary registry settings.

Then in query analyzer, run these :

exec xp_dropserver <oldname>

exec sp_addserver <newname>, LOCAL

Your data will be safe, but it never hurts to have backups (You DO have backups don't you ????)

As for running setup, that is one of the steps. Don't you have the CD anymore ?

I'm sure you could do it manually, if you knew all the places to change. But that is going to be very time consuming and error prone.
