How does MSDE compare in speed to a full blown $5k version of SQL server? Is there any performance loss at all?

Thanks.

The engine is the same, so the performance is the same. With MSDE, you don't get the GUI tools. You also can't use Reporting Services with MSDE. MSDE can't be used on Windows Data Center. Yada, yada, yada. There are a lot of things that MSDE can't do. Performance though should be the same.

Well, performance will be the same up to about 5-10 users, at which point MSDE will "slow down" automatically. I think they say "5 concurrent queries" is the point at which it starts to slow. If you don't have users banging on the server, you can get a lot more physical users on this "5 user" system.

With MSDE, just get in and out as quickly as possible.

you can download the evaluation edition of sql server 2000 (it's free) and install the client tools against your MSDE installation. I'm not sure if the client tools expire, though, or not ....

We have about 10 users here, and no one ever has performance issues. I use a Dell high-end workstation. Just make sure you have at least a 7200RPM drive, it makes a huge difference.

Yep, RAM, DISK, and CPU are what makes a SQL Server fast (in that order pretty much).

I also have a MSDE db on W2K Pro supporting maybe 8-10 workstations and two db apps. MSDE has performed well in this environment.

Ok, this is good to know. I am planning on building a new server for my website on which I run snitz. ( http://www.snowmobilefanatics.com ) Was planning on something like a 2.6 ghz rig with a couple 7200 rpm drives and a gig of ram or so. This winter I have been averaging 100-150 users online at a time. I can expect it to double next snowmobile season. I think snitz only makes a few connections to the db. I will probably be runnins some SP's as well.

I think Gratz has worked some magic with this version of Snitz to make it faster.

Give this article a read.

And that would be breaking the license agreement...

Hey Euan, that's good to know. And welcome! It's always good to have a knowledgeable MS guy around.

P.S. Great to chat with you at PASS last year, hope to see you in Orlando!

It's been running on MSDE for about 3 weeks now. It only starts to slow down with 80+ users online at once

Hmm, I will have to look into it and do more testing. I need to be supporting at least 150 - 200 users online at a time next season.

150-200 users! I'd seriously look at Standard Edition of SQL Server.

Are you sure? I don't really want to spend a whole $5k on a database server. I am sure MSDE can handle it, I wouldn't see why not.

The key is: get in and get out quick.

Connect, do what you have to do and disconnect immediately; that's how we make MSDE work well.
