I must now choose between the Sybase ASA and Microsoft MSDE database engines. Currently I am in favour of MSDE because for 500 USD I get:

1. Freely redistributable engine WITH NETWORK SUPPORT.
2. It can be used with any kind of application (I do not know if the similar Sybase licence allows to use ASA with something else than Power Builder application).

Am I missing something? Any comments on the stability of the systems?

msde allows a max of 5 concurrent threads (not connections or users) and is limitted to 2G.
Apart from that you get almost the full sql server product (few limitations on processors and such which shouldn't matter). It doesn't come with client tools so people usually develop with a full version.

What are you going to develop in? Might want to get a msdn subscription which will give you msde and lots more including the client tools and full version of sql server to develop in but it is a bit more money.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.
