Text and ntext datatypes are slower than varchar because they are not stored in tables like varchar(although I think there is a way to store text fields in a table in SQL Server 2000). I would recommend avoiding text and ntext and use varchar instead. On SQL 7 and 2000, the maximum length of a varchar field is 8000.
