Hi. I've got a server power issue. At my new job they gave me two DELL Optiplex GX260 PCs, one for my desktop pc the other for "SQL Server development."

At my old job we ran a heavily used client-server app (web browser-to-SQL Server 7.0 via ASP)on a Compaq ML 320 which was upgraded to a second processor and over a GB of memory. This machine did exactly what we wanted it to and I would not have wanted to run the app on a DELL pc, let me tell you.

The people who bought me the DELLs at my new job have said things like: "if you need more power we can just drop memory into the machine." (obviously, these guys are not hardware guys). The database I'm redesigning is not particularly large and system users number 90 max (hard to say how many concurrent users of the system at this point).

My fear: I'll be stuck running a web browser-based production application against IIS/SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition (my RDMBS of choice for this project) on the DELL Optiplex PC.

Can anyone discuss the major advantages of running the type of app I've mentioned on a "real" COMPAQ server versus the type of DELL pc I've described? I'm going to need to make a good argument for new hardware.

Thanks much.

Might help if we knew what kind of CPUs were in either machine...and how many...what kind of hard drives...amount of RAM...

Believe it or not, "Dell Optiplex GX260" doesn't elucidate any of these things.
