I'm not convinced that is the only way either.

Yep. No point in posting the same answer twice or three times because of cross- or double-posting.

I'm sure there's another way as well, but as you mentioned in your response, the alternatives are not too cheerful. The UDF solution is probably the best given the other constraints.
