I currently run SQL Server 2005 64-bit Developer Edition (Service Pack 2 - it will be SP 3 as soon as I can get hold of it). I am running this on a stand-alone box with Windows Server 2003 as the OS.Soon, I will be buying another computer for a colleague who will be running SQL Server as specified above. However, I am not happy with Windows Server and am wondering about changing to either XP 64-bit or Vista 64-bit. The machine will not be networked.I would welcome advice on this since, in some ways, I would be happy enough to use XP or Vista, and think that 64-bit development is more likely on Vista than on other Windows OS's. However, I am not convinced that SQL Server 2005 works with Vista and, like everyone else, have heard plenty of complaints about Vista. All advice gratefully received.Thanks.Chris |

I've got SQL 2005 developer edition running quite happily on Vista 64 bit (laptop). No issues, no problems. It just has to be patched to SP2 or higher.--Gail Shaw |

Thanks for your thoughts. If everything works on Vista 64-bit, does SQL Server have to be loaded with SP 2 included in the instal program or will it install without this and allow subsequent installation of SP 2? - My installation disks don't contain any patches. This may sound an odd question but I was caught out with SQLS 2000 - it wouldn't install to a 64-bit machine because it only had a 16-bit installation program...I would have had to buy a version with SP 2 already loaded in order to get a 32-bit installer...I don't want to find something similarly frustrating if I try to load 64-bit SQLS into Vista.Any thoughts? Thanks.Chris |

Install sql2k5 first then apply sp2 right away. By the way, where did you get 16-bit stuff? |

Thanks to you all for setting my mind at rest.I have to say that this forum is much more helpful than another (UK) forum to which I also belong...The version of sqls 2k that came with a 16-bit installer was supplied by a Company that sold both computers and sqls solutions. This is a long time ago...Chris |
