I understand I cannot install MSDE in computer that has SQL Server. What about the client ones? If I have a computer that only has SQL Server client network utility, can I install MSDE? Would it mess up the client utility and whatever applications that utilize it? Thank you for your time! |

Client utility (cliconfg.exe) has nothing to do with MSDE installation, or even SQL Server installation. It is included with the Windows installation in the Root\System32 folder, and I have seen it on machines that never had MSDE/SQL installed. Uninstalling MSDE will not affect it. However, if the machine has SQL Server client tools such as Query Analyzer, Enterprise Manager, or DTS installed, they will get uninstalled when MSDE is uninstalled.Sarah Berger MCSD |

Installing MSDE will not mess up the SQL Client Tools, which Client Network Utility is one of them. The Client Network Utility tool is just an easy way to modify the SQL Server aliases' registry entries. Even if you delete the Client Network Utility, your registry entries for your aliases will still exist. But do you even have a license to use the tools? Often people who use MSDE do not have a license for the tools. If that is the case, I would suggest looking into the Freeware tools that are available for SQL Server.Tara |

Thanks for the replies. My problem is that my user has an application that uses SQL client with a certain set of login ID and password. The application I'm providing uses MSDE with a different set of login ID/password. So my concern is that if I install MSDE into his computer, would I mess up his other application due to a different login? |

I have a XP workstation with both SQL 7 Server client tools & MSDE. Recently I uninstalled MSDE which did not affect the SQL Server client tools.======Doug G====== |
