Hello!

I'm sizing up a few different ways to accomplish a CSV import to a table in SQL 2012, and while I've found some BULK INSERT, Power Shell and Log Parser methods none of them stands out as a favorite and none of them seem to meet one of the desired characteristics of this project.

So, I wonder what you guys might think about this little operation that I'm trying to do!

What would be ideal would be to have a monitored folder that their user could drop a CSV file into, with SOMETHING listening for that arrival to kick off the import process.

An alternative to that would be a procedure that I could have run periodically. Would probably a pretty low overhead operation, too, so if it ran every half hour or so to look for the document I'd expect that this would be fine.

Of the methods I'm looking at, I'm not homing in on which one is really in most in line with best practices and streamlined operations yet, so I really look forward to getting your takes on this.

Thanks!

YOu didn't mention SSIS in your list, but it is ideal for doing this

You know, I've just been digging into that angle. At first it looked like SSMS might only support a one off import, which I'm not interested in.

Some things seem to point to the Business Intelligence Studio, which is not installed.

It does have some Import and Export Data applications for 32 and 64 bit installed, and I've just fired them up to see what they're all about.

Is there another way in SSMS?

Not SSMS, but you can install SQL Server Data Tools (free download) which gives you SSIS development. M$ renamed BIDS to SSDT for 2012 and 2014

Hey, thanks for that, and here's a cool twist:

It's SQL Server 2008 EXPRESS!!!

That's surely an unwelcome sight...

What kind of badness to you think THAT brings to the table???

Thanks!

dunno, but it surely doesn't belong in the "SSIS and Import/Export (2012)" forum!

For that matter, why 2008? If it's Express, it's free. so why not go with 2014 Express instead?

Yes, I have no good argument for your point!

I'll size things up in the morning, as what I discovered was NOT what the client thought they had...

At any rate, thank you very much for responding!
