Do you use one to supplement SQL Server's tools ?

What's the best one for the best price ?

I use Visio when I have a need. Works pretty well I think, but there are better products out there. For example ER/Studio by Embarcadero, looks really cool. But expensive as hell.

Visio is good and cheap.

Visio seems to be the most popular. Also at http://www.conceptdraw.com/en/ , their product is pretty ok and won't break the bank at $250.

Just a warning.. ERD, while very popular for designing DB's, has major problems when it comes to describing the attributes of a relation. It is good for describing FK's, after all the name of the techinque says it all...

We use a tool from sybase called PowerDesigner. I think it used to be called Data ARchitect (I have used it a while now I guess).

Anyway, like most of these tools it works with a multitude of databases, not just SQL Server.

check it out here: http://www.sybase.com/products/enterprisemodeling/powerdesigner

You can download an eval here:
http://crm.sybase.com/sybase/www/eBD/my_03/pd952_dwnld_eval.jsp

The price could be steep depending on the options you want. Check it out though.

I think these guys offer a free trial http://www.asapsoftware.com/ca/erwin.htm

but depends whether you just want to draw diagrams - or whether you actually want it to snap in and manage constraints....
