I know this is a little off topic to this forum but I can't figure out where to go to find out this info.Me and a few frends are going to make an online RPG with a SQL backend, but we are not sure on what kind of server to get to run the game. Is there a special server OS that is designed to handle this stuff or should i just setup a server with SQL on it and all the game handling has to be written by the program? If you know where I can go to get more info on seting up a server for our game or can help me please answer. Thanks!--For those with wings, fly to your dreamsDearms are what are found at the end of reality, and your reality if what is found at the end of your dreams.

I don't really think that SQL Server is the right tool for the job. There are a number of open source RPG and MUD engines around, written in C, Java or (I think) Python. My understanding is you can map out the "world" and give it to these engines and they will do the rest for you. Perhaps a look around www.sourceforge.net will bring up some good results.Damian

Thank you for your replay, me and my frends have looked at a lot of premade RPG and MUD programs from www.sourceforge.net and none of them realy do what we want. We are hopping that after some work this will be come a hug and popular game (like Diablo 2 or Final Fantasy XI) and so have decided to write the program from scrach with our own engin. With that in mind have any other good suggestions?--For those with wings, fly to your dreamsDearms are what are found at the end of reality, and your reality if what is found at the end of your dreams.

If they don't do what you want, why not modify them ? At least all the plumbing would be there. But if you have decided to write from scratch, there really isn't much to suggest. There isn't an OS designed for RPGs.The only other thing I would suggest, is a free server product called Twisted Metal, it is a multithreaded Python server that will handle all of your transport and connection issues, leaving you to be able to build your logic on top of that.Damian
