Does anyone have a link to, or care to share, a SQL solution to the classic bin packing problem. I'd love to see a comparison of the various packing algorithms (First Fit, Last Fit, Next Fit, Best Fit, Worst Fit, Almost Worst Fit).Jay White{0}

I couldn't find anything. Can anyone tell me which Celko book (or other resource) covers this? A quick look through the table of contents here doesn't lead me to think its in the 'Smarties' book ...Jay White{0}

It's not in Smarties (I checked my copy), but this one:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1558604537/qid=1031251390/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/104-4805330-3335129?v=glance&s=booksMight have it. If not, it's a good resource anyway.

I got it, and oh my, it is totally worth it...BTW, what about Joe's article here:http://www.dbmsmag.com/9808d06.htmlHe gives it another name, but it's essentially a bin packing article.

| It's not covered in depth, but in section 17.5 of Smarties Celko covers Dr. Codd's T-Join operator, using an example of putting groups of students into rooms of limited size. It has a few interesting things, hitting on a couple of ways to do best fit/first fit. I think he Might hit worst fit, but if so only in passing.----------------------"O Theos mou!
