Hi there, was hoping someone could help point me in the right direction. I've hunted and hunted on SQLTeam.com for best-practice storefront database designs to help me brainstorm a system I'm going to be building relatively soon, but haven't found much specific to this.

Like I said, looking to help myself brainstorm...so I'm looking for things such as:
* Handling shipping costs
* Best way to set up sub-items and categorization structure (unlimited levels?)
* Allowing one item to be a culmination of a number of other items

Blah, blah...basic stuff really. If anyone has any good links, please let me know. Thanks!

With the shipping, you have to determine one key thing.
Do we charge by weight, or charge a flat rate per item.

If it's a flat weight, then you have a parameters table that stores that.

if it's by weight, you setup a table like this:

Ship_Type Min_Weight Max_Weight Cost
UPSGround 5.00 10.00 $2.00
UPSGround 10.01 20.00 $4.00

With a table like that, you can add up the weight of each item, and then find the record where your total weight is BETWEEN Min_Weight and Max_Weight for the Ship_Type the user selected.

You also need to have some "user login" type stuff that stores a users contact, shipping, and billing info. I HIGHLY suggest that you DO NOT store the full credit card number in your database. If you are ever hacked...... bad things can happen. Store the first two and last four digits.

Have you thought about purchasing a shopping cart application? There are tons of them out there, some possibly free. This type of application is a bit large, but it's been done to death by LOTS of folks.

I've thought about purchasing, yes... It needs to be in VB.NET, and I need to be able to heavily customize it. So...I may start from scratch (or pick pieces from here and there) to get things going. I'm currently really interested in the best way to set up unlimited category levels. What's the best way to handle this in SQL?
