                                            | Bernard writes "I am currently employed by a company that specialise in personal investments. They run SIEBEL for CRM, with a MS-SQL backend and run a backoffice product called OMEGA with a HERON database system. Current requirements call for various MI reports to be delivered. Up to now they have been reporting directly from operational systems (SIEBEL and OMEGA). The current requirements call for a colaboration of data from the various source systems in order for delivery of MI through a standard dynamically accessible interface like the WEB. The problem is that these guys are hesitant to spend money and options like SAS is out of the question due to price implications. Can SQL2000 be used to build a meta-data framework to support the ETL process and then to build MODELS and Dimensions for reports? If this is possible using SQL Analysis Services, how do I make these reports available via the INTRANET that they run?Of course they already have licenses for these Microsoft components and if this can be done it will save them costs." |

                                          | DTS will take care of your ETL requirements and yes Analysis Services will allow you to build your OLAP cubes. As for reporting, whilst it is possible to query using ADO MD and MDX and code your own web interface (if you have the enterprise edition to allow HTTP access) it really will save you a lot of time and effort if you invested in a tool such as Proclarity or Business Objects.HTHJasper Smith |
