Hello-

I have a customer that would like to, import data from an excel file into our SQL Server 2000 database. The excel file would be in a predetermined format, and we would probably be doing one update per day.

How would I go about doing this. The information from the excel file would have to be inserted into multiple tables in the database. Would I use DTS for this?

Also, I'm assuming there is a way to automate this process. If I can get the excel file to the server, is there a way to run a stored procedure that would take care of this.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

yeah, this is the stuff dts was made for . . .

alternatively, you can use OPENROWSET to query, and thus update your database, directly from the spreadsheet.

The way to automate it is to schedule a job, and then have a step in the job that runs the dts package.

Is there a way to run a job from a sproc? I envision setting up a site that allows the customer to upload the file, and have an ASP page run a sproc that converts the file.

Thanks.

sure... sp_start_job

Or you can run the DTS pkg directly from the proc. See this thread ...
