after restoring a prod backup to the qa box, the inital stored proc performance is poor. however, performance improves on subsequent uses. does the query plan get rebuilt when moving to another box? thank you.

Sounds like you are rebuilding the cache. Repeated call results get pulled from the cache, speeding up the overall performance.

The query plan does not get rebuilt after a restore. The performance problem that you mention probably has to do with the data not being in memory yet. This is normal. The first time you request data, it'll be slow since it's not in memory. The next time it's faster as it's in memory. You should do an update statistics on all of your tables after a restore.Tara Kizer
