Lee writes "Hello,

I’m trying to create a unique ID for a database management system. I'm currently using the following data type to generate the ID uniqueness.

data type = uniqueidentifier
default value = (newid())

The main problem with this function is that the outputted results are very long and complex ({FA78C269-F7AA-4D2B-B52F-14D5F37157BB}). To this end I would very much appreciate if you could advise me with any way I can shorten this unique ID.

Many Thanks,

Lee Scott"

If you're working within a single table, you can use an IDENTITY field to do this. Otherwise I think your stuck with GUIDs or inventing your own schema to do this.
