I have table which has insertion rate of 1 rows /per min.
There are hundreds of similar tables .I want to know whether to
index this table (on datetime field).how much it affect the insertion performance.

Thanks

Most often indexes slow down insertion, since SQL Server has to update and manage the index after each insert statement.

But 1 ins/min? That is very slow. My old laptop handles up to 41,000 single-line ins/min.

If there is only one table then no problem .But sql server has to handle hundreds of similar tables .what is the effect on overall performance

Thanks

How often do you select form those tables? Could you add the indexes at that point, or periodically dump the data to an "indexed" table?
