Active Directory
How does sqlserver knows to wich active directory groups a user belongs.

The solution should compare a groupname with the groupnames of the current user and return a bit.
This way a single bit can tell if the current user belongs to a predefined group.

There is an extended stored procedure you could use to return a logins groups:

exec master.dbo.xp_logininfo @acctname = 'aausa\carl.federl' , @option = 'all'

Alternatively, LDAP can be defined as a linked server although this is usually to Active Directory.
