Dynamic SQL and 8000 limit

Hi all,

I am trying to execute the Dynamic SQL which is set of ALTER TABLE statements for different tables. The string can be more then 8000 characters, which is limit for varchar. I can not declare @str1 varchar(8000),@str2 varchar(8000)... , etc and EXEC(@str1+@str2+...), because I do not know how many variables I need. Is it any work around this situation? I also need to generate set of INSERT statements, which will meet the same problem.

any help is appreciated, I searched forum, but did not found the right idea how to implement this.

I think it might be wise to step back and ask you: why are you doing this, and what are you trying to accomplish?

Personally, I would not do this with dynamic sql. I would generate a script.

Additionally I would not do an ALER, rathe I'd create a new table, move the data, then do a rename...

but that's just me

I need to generate set of statements and run it. It is the part of batch update running by request. I am going to make stored procedure for this task and call it from another SP. INSERT statements are based on different tables, which are more complicated, I just do not want burn you with all details, but question is same: how to avoid 8000 limit.

I added identity column to @tmp and loop through it:

I just run 1 statement at the time, which is OK. It could affect the performance, but it is not critical in this case.

Ah, OK. So you are running each statement separately. That will work just fine (slower, as you say, but if that doesn't matter for the job at hand then its Perfectly Fine!)

Here is what I propose.

run the create proc below and see how I use this proc in the section below GO.

The idea is to declare 11 vars of varchar(8000) in you main routine.
use one of them as the (8000) chars you would like to concat.
pass all 11 to this routine and finally

exec(@var1+@var2+@var3.........You see where I'm going with this)

you can mod this yourself if you need more than 80 000 chars.

I was showing the idea.
I have a cleaner version that supports 400 000 chars, if your interested.

I needed this to produce an CASE statement to do 5000 updates on 1000 tables
that contain on average 10mil rows.
Without it I would need to do seperate updates.
