I am looking for a source control system and wondered what people use. I've already looked at SourceSafe and SourceGear Vault. My requirements are very modest -

  • Cheap (fairly obvious this but if it is more expensive than Sourcesafe it needs to be exceptionally good to get my interest)

  • There are unlikely to ever be more than 5 users

  • It needs to be windows based

  • It could sit on a SQL server

  • genuinely easy to use, setup, configure and administer

  • I need to be able to add all sorts of files to it e.g SQL scripts, Access databases etc.

  • Needs to integrate with Visual Studio

  • Needs to be simple to backup the whole thing (which it would be if it was on a SQL server

I don't (think I) need all the bells and whistles. I've looked briefly at CVS and some of its relatives but it looks very complex.

I'd be interested in people's thoughts and suggestions. As is probably very obvious I don't know a great deal about it so would also appreciate ideas of what features to look for

thanks

steve

I like the look of SourceGear Vault. The boss Eric Sink is a bit of a mover and a shaker! (See his blog and/or www.joelonsoftware.com.

One thing in particular (which I don't think Source Safe does, but its donkeys years since I used S.S.) that I like about Vault is that you can check out the whole world, and then check in when & what you want to. If someone else beat you to the punch them you can "compare & merge" your changes on the way back in.

So you don't have to Checkout and Lock each time you want a file (not a problem in Visual Studio, its part of "File Open" ) but for SQL Files with Q.A. it seems a better approach :

Check out all .SQL files to my C drive
Check in the ones I've modified each day / when testing done / whatever

You either get to a convenient point where all changes are checked in, and then you could check the whole lot out again (which catches anything anyone else has checked in)

or

You can go the whole year with your original checked out set, but increasingly you will find you have to "compare & merge" your changes in.

The other thing I would look at is what happens when the repository gets corrupted - can you repair it easily? How many horror stories are there? You thought SQL BACKUP was tricky, eh?!

works ok although it has some problems with branching.

"Source Off Site"

That's Source Gear's "More like Source Safe" alternative to their own "Vault" product isn't it?
