Can you ping his server name?

DNS is not resolving the hostname to an IP address for you. I'd suggest contacting whoever is responsible for the DNS server to fix this. But an alternative is that you can setup an alias for the MSDE server using Client Network Utility or via regedit.exe. You can search the forums for my detailed explanation of how to do this if you need more assistance.

You could always add an entry to your hosts file so that the machine name always resolves to the same IP address. Are you part of a domain? If so, this shouldn't be happening.

Modifying Hosts file is a thing of the past. For SQL Server connectivity, an alias is what you need.

Being part of a domain doesn't help you when DNS isn't setup properly.
