i cant' seem to get it to work, and i KNOW my programmer is showing, but what i need is something along the lines of

select fname, lastname, servCode
from staff
where left(servcode,1)<>'w' or servcode<>'00002'

the second part works, servcode<>'00002', but the left command is giving me fits.

any help greatly appreciated, as this is one of the last hurdles i have to solve to complete the project.

you've gotta be clear to get a good answer

so what kind of problem do you have??
where left(servcode,1)<>'w'
will return all data that doesn't begin with 'w'.

Go with the flow & have fun! Else fight the flow

servcode (alias, not real field name, cause i cant remember the real field name right now :) ) is used to distinguish between fulltime salaried employees, part time hourly employees and contractors. full time start with a 0, parttime start with a W, and contractors are all 00002.

it throws an error when i try to save the SP i am using to populate a tree....exact error i can go get if needed.
