What are the disadvantages of using too many nonclustered indexes on a table apart from excessive use of storage and slo search?

You won't get a slow search from an index, quite the reverse. You will get slower INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE performance because the indexes need to be updated during these operations. Index operations are also logged so your transaction log will grow as well.
