Hello!

Business Objects 5.1.7 generates an outer join with an * notation like this:

select a.a, b.b
from a, b
where a *= b
and
b.b = 'B'

this gives a different result than the following query:

select a.a, b.b
from a left outer join b on (a.key = b.key)
where b.b = 'B'

In the upper query, the condition b.b = 'B' has no effect. Why is this? I know an inner join whould be better, but this is kind of weird isnt it? If there's already a thread about this, sorry, could ya plz point me to it?

Another question: I get a 'Timeout Expired' very often here in the Forum search. This is a forum about good db design right

Thnx y'all
Jeroen.

You shouldn't be using the first join syntax at all. The b.b = 'B' is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. It's a LEFT OUTER JOIN, so you are correct on this.

The forum is a piece of third-party software from Snitz forums. I'm sure they would love to hear your suggestions.
