To give you some context, I know very little about clustering, and I am working with an Active/Active/Active config, that was implemented by a consultant who is no longer in contact. I read here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/193890/ that the proper way to configure WINS is to disable it on a cluster. I noticed today that 2 of the 3 servers have it disabled on the heartbeat network connection. If the WINS server went down, with one of the clustered servers configured for WINS over the heartbeat, might this cause the cluster to failover? Also, are there any implications to the cluster for changing the WINS configuration? |

Does the cluster have dedicated heartbeat connection among all nodes? That connection shouldn't be in wins. |

Yes, there is a dedicated connection for the heartbeat. WINS had been disabled (Disable Netbios over TCP/IP) for the heartbeat connection on two of the servers. The third server, while it didn't have an IP entry for WINS, was left at Default. We do have a WINS server on the network. |

Having wins entry for heartbeat or not will not cause failover. |

Fair enough... If 2 of the 3 servers in the cluster were connected to a faulty domain controller, could that cause a failover? There are some userenv errors almost an entire day preceding the failover in only 2 of the servers. After doing some poking around on them, it seems that those same 2 were connected to the same DC, with the third server on another DC... |

They don't have to connect to same DC as long as in same domain. |

But if 2 of the 3 lost connection to the domain, despite still having an active heartbeat, would failover commence? |

Hmm... if the heartbeat failed too, would THAT cause the failover?P.S. Thank you rmiao so much for your help so far. |

Yes, heartbeat failure will cause failover. |
