it really makes no difference at this point. We are currently specing our systems with Intel quad core CPUs. Before this we were using AMD Opterons. The quad-cores let us use 2U boxes and get equivalent computing power as the larger 4U boxes we used in the past. So if that is important then I suggest Intel. AMD also has Quad cores out or soon to be available, so that point might be moot now.-ec |

"No sentiments please, no cursing or haters."I thought that said "No cursors" .. which seemed appropriate for the hardware choice for a database server! The RAID controllers on our Dell boxes have been an unmitigated disaster, but they are old enough that I expect that problem doesn't exist any more |

The Dell controllers that I've seen and used here at my current employer have been horrible. However, the engineering team here seems to balk at spending $1500 for a decent controller too. They don't seem to get that cost = performance in some parts of the hardware world. They fail to see the humor that I see when a box boots up and the internal controller has twice as much memory as the controller serving the DAS - 256MB to 128MB on the external.I got a brand new external 2-channel controller that has 128MB plugged into a 14 drive array and it's barely able to sustain 30MB/s while the internal controller will sustain close to 100 over five internal drives.... |

Performance apart, ours trash the database when a disk fails and is (automatically) removed from the RAID. That's not supposed to happen of course ... but ...so we might as well have no RAID at all ... |
