Hi. I want to be a SQL DBA and have been reading stuff on my own. I need help getting started though. if any of you can suggest what I should focus on learning or if there are any websites that has good details for the steps on how to perform tuning, mirroring, clustering, all the duties of a SQL DBA. I could really use the help and I appreciate any help given. thanks.

I can recommend books that have helped me:

Beginners Guide to Transact SQL (Wrox)
Gurus Guide to Transact SQL - Ken Henderson
Admin 911 SQL Server 2000
SQL Server 2000 Unleashed

Also, I am finding that the DBA job is a pretty even blend of SQL knowledge and Admin knowledge. Something that was extremely helpful for me was the advice to use Query Analyzer commands rather then the GUI as much as possible for flexibility and reliability, you also learn much more in the process even when it is easier to just click the mouse!

I would also recommend printing out or at least keeping close by a reference with all the system tables, functions, DBCC commands ( for older stuff ) and system global variables so you can grab them quickly and learn them through immersion.

Finally, I would just recommend taking on projects and completing them utilizing the resources I mention. Also, as stated before, this site is an awesome resource! Especially check out the FAQ and try and help solve the puzzles that people post each day, it is great practice!

Don't forget the secret initiation ritual.

"Thank you, sir! May I have another?"
