I have learned a lot here at sqlteam over the short time I've been here. time to give something back.so I am handing out SqlSpec licenses to MVPs and qualifying Yaks. SqlSpec is a shareware app I wrote btw, it's my main hobby these days. I really gotta spend less time on it so I could make some progress on my house, but that's another story...Even if you are not an MVP but have contributed significantly to the SQL Server community, you qualify. Here I am thinking about the regular yaks on this forum, you all know who you are. There's more detail here: http://www.elsasoft.org/mvp.htmCheers,Jesse www.elsasoft.org |

That's generous of you Jesse.I had a little wander round for a look at SqlSpec (don't know why I haven't done it before!)I have some "Reverse Engineer" scripts that I run when I get called in to trouble shoot something (bit different to Documenting something, I know, but the two are somewhat related). On my Table + Column report I include some stats for each column:Number of NULL/Non-NULL rows (Should column be change to NOT NULL)Max actual length (Defined longer than necessary)Number of Distinct entriesFor a String column the number of rows that are valid dates / numbers If the column is used in one, or more, indexes (in addition to being in the PK)If the column is an IDENTITYRow Count of the 10 most commonly occurring values, and the value itselfAlso reports on tables with no PK, and no Clustered Index.Just some thoughts and ramblings!Kristen |

Does ERwin generate docs? I've never used it, but from what I can tell it's primarily a data modeling tool. also it's $$$. www.elsasoft.org |

"I didn't get a mail from you asking for a license though"That's very kind of you. But I would only take you up on a freebie-offer if I thought I was going to need it in real-world-usage, or to recommend to clients, and at the moment neither of those situations are the case.A nice shiny copy sitting on the shelf would be great, but if you are providing it for free I ain't going to ask unless I think I can actually make good use of it. But you can be sure I'll ask, cap-in-hand, if the situation arises!!Kristen |
