Following the below topic:

I followed the advice of Paul Randal, but Im stumped as I am not able to determin what the corruption issues are. This is SQL 2000 and the database is a Solomon database that was recently upgraded to 6.5. the error I get when running the DBCC checkdb is as follows:

When I run select * from sysindexes, I get:

When I run dbcc page (dbname, 1, 18645, 3)

Now, the bad news. I am a bit of a novice and have picked this up from someone who left my company. It appears the latch error has been around for some time and only reared up when I instituted a new back up system that runs a dbcc check befor backing up. I don't think I have any clean backups.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1a) Make sure you have a backup before you start attempting to fix this
1b) Restore that backup on another machine - to prove that you can
1c) If it was me I would also stop SQL Services and copy both MDF and LDF files to another server and check that I could ATTACH them - but that's probably belt&braces

2) Then you are looking at what you can salvage
2a) I would try doing a SELECT * FROM Table1 (output to file or some NULL device)
2b) Any that have no errors can be exported (e.g. using BCP - make sure you use Native Format)
2c) Those that have errors need to be exported in sections, using the clustered index, up to the point of a break - i.e. you want to try to export the first section, and then the section after the break
2d) Don't bother to export any of the System tables (such as sysindexes)

3) Script the whole database - using Enterprise Manager : General Script

4a) Create a new database - preferably on a different server as this one may be suspect
4b) (Using the script made earlier, but do NOT create any Foreign keys yet)

5) Import back all the exported data using BCP

6a) Attempt to create the FKs - skipped in (4a)
6b) Attempt to recreate all data in the Gaps - from (2c)
6c) If any FKeys fail to create its probably "gaps" in the data

7) Run DBCC CHECKDB to check that the "recreated" database is in good health

8) Back it up!

9) Put procedures in place to detect database corruption sooner in future

One of the statistics blobs for an index with its metadata on that page is corrupt. You should be able to work out which it is by doing a 'select * where id=XXX and indid=YYY' for all the (id, indid) pairs listed in the DBCC PAGE output you posted and seeing which one produces the error. Then just drop the statistics for that index and recreate them.

Paul,

I took this to be terminal because it looked like sysindexes was hosed:

DBCC CHECKDB gives:
Could not read and latch page (1:18645) with latch type SH. sysindexes failed.

and "select * from sysindexes" gives errors

I figure I'm unlikely to be able to wisely interpret those errors in most cases, so at that point I'm first trying restores from backups and then if, for example, the problem has been around for months I'm trying data export and re-import into a clean system.

However, from your reply it looks like I should assume that the corruption could be in the Stats. data, and thus fixable.

If the corruption is just in the Stats data would an UPDATE STATISTICS across all indexes likely fix it? (assuming that is the only problem and there is no bad hardware etc)

I should mention that I am working out of a test db that I created from the Solomon Databas maintenace tool. So as I restored to the test db, I got the errors and will attempt to fix the test db first. So I can hack around in this db if need be. The only issue I am concerned with is that the solomon system uses a system db that all app dbs use, so I am hoping to not touch the system db in the fix. I do have back up of that one that is clean. The other 3 dbs come back clean on the dbcc.

I'm only guessing, but in case it helps:

The SPID and Process ID look to just the the IDs of SQL Servers processes at the time of the error.

Looking at the Dump above maybe it is these values?

No - it depends on exactly how the index entry is corrupted - you may need to drop the broken text blob first.

No - the SPID and Process ID are not part of the output from DBCC PAGE - they're part of the error message. Look at the decoded dump of each record in the DBCC PAGE output and you'll see columns called id and indid. Use those.

the select statement with th id # returned no bad results every slot (there where 15 of them) returened a result This is the statement I used

select * from sysindexes where id='30623152' and indid='3'

If it were me, at this stage (given that you are on a copy of the database) I would be dropping and recreating Stats for everything.

Possible also trying a

SELECT DISTINCT id, indid FROM sysindexes

and scripting a SELECT * for all of them in case that prompted an error somewhere.

But hopefully Paul will be along in a minute with a Pukka Plan

There are 16 rows on that page, not 15 - make sure you tried them all.

Does select * from sysindexes return any rows before failing? If not, I'd like you to try doing range selects on sysindexes, e.g.

select * from sysindexes where id >= 20911146 and id <= 30623153

to narrow down where the error occurs.

I've been around the world and back on theis. I have been working with SQL support - They know who paul is - I have dumpedt the data and dts it into a newly created database (created using the solomon Db maintenance tool) The only issue I had with dts is that it would not insert data into 14 tables due to a primary key violation. upon review of the tables in question, the are "standerd" solomon tables like "country", containing a list of contries. The tables in question are identicle to the same table in the old database and in all the other app databases I use, so I ma not woried. they are all basically tables that are used for drop downs in the app.

The production db that is currently corrupt is still there, untouched. The test db I was working on yesterday is at the same state it was yesterday morning. I have a new db with just the raw data in it without sys indexes and I have what I think is a clean and populated db that is going to work. So I shifted tact from the work you all where leading me towards. I want to come back to this as I want to understand what has happened here.

When I worked with the SQL support team, I showed themm this thread. We determined that syscolumn and sysobject are fine - no corruption there, but they where telling me that there is no statisticle data in the sysindexes to drop, so I am confused. I will deferr to Paul as I would like to repair this - so I understand it.

So If I run the above statement, and it errors, will it give me the exact row? and then what. SQL lead me to think that the tabe could not be altered at all. Let me run it and I'll post results.

ok - no need to post the data, that's not helpful. Now try the other two ranges (< 20911146 and > 30623152) and narrow it down to where the error is. Once you find the range where the error is (and I'm confused as to why its not on the page that CHECKDB complains about), you'll need to look through the pages at the leaf level of the sysindexes clustered index to find out which page has it on.

I suspect this is going to be too much of a hassle for you - if so I advise giving up trying to repair this and rebuilding the database instead to save time.

I already rebuilt it, but am curious - If this takes up too much of your time, I understand. as I think I may be out of the woods, I can explore this without so much urgency.

I'm not worried about my time - I'm concerned about your time - you're the one who needs to do all the work

Does CHECKDB still give the same error? Why does the CSS engineer you spoke to think there are no stats on the indexes?
