I have pinged the server ok and telnet on the correct port also from the client PC.

I installed

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.2047.00

Do you get a surface area config utility with express?
It so check that it is configured to allow remote connections.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

Can you post your connection string?
Have you changed it to reflect the new environment?
