pls help me pick the right job (i have 2 options), what is better for a future freelancer:I got 2 offers:1/ The first job is an application support where I will maintain existing code in (VB6 and .Net). No development at the time mainly maintaing existing code in VB6 and .Net Windows forms. The job is within a big office supplies distributor.2/ The second job as an ANALYST working mostly with SQL (or SQL server). I think a lots of queries in SQL that re used in web sites. This is within a huge company (CGI) which is consulting company for big corporations and government. What is better if my career gaol is to become a freelancer in the future. or if I wanna start up my own small little company in the future. Also: I am 9-month (not long enough aI guess) familiar with .net technologies but am really beginer in SQL and SQL server. Thanks a lot for advising a junior |

I would say look at the SQL job. unfortunately, programmers are a dime a dozen today and many are getting outsourced. If you go down the SQL route there are other doors that open up to you. I view that as a golden opportunity. The programming jobs are easy to come by, you can get one of those if the SQL gig doesn't work out. At least that is how I would view it, if I were you..-ec |

yes SQL job pays better.Do you think programming languages (VB4, 5, 6 .Net .Net2.0 .Net 3) get outdated faster than SQL. If that s the case i ll be better off SQL job since I don t want to be reading and updating my skills constantly over the years(Microsoft doesn t seem to wanna give us a break:)- How about freelance, can a SQL programmer be a freelancer, re there many SQL proramming freelance oportunities. Thanks for your advice. |

get used to constantly updating your skills. That comes with the territory.I think the SQL job is the better avenue because starting pay is higher (typically) and this kind of job can easily evolve into a technical mgmt position if that is where you want your career to go.This doesn't mean that you should stop with C# or vb.net, nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, or computer hacking skills... Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.-ec |

But if you turn out to be rubbish and unable to think strait and think logically and study/read a lot, either route is doomed and you'll get found out soon enough. but I'm sure that wont happen. |

go down the SQL road.i do both .net programming and sql.and i have to say that since .net 2.0 came out i again have the feeling that i don't know anything about it.with SQL server 2k5 i don't have that feeling personally i hate to support old apps. i do that currently with one of ours (old asp) and i dislike it if you play your cards right you'll meet right people in the big company that can be of future help as a free lancer.those were my 2 cents...Go with the flow & have fun! Else fight the flow |

OK, I've lost track now. What color was the SQL pill?Or you could go with Oracle, which is more like a suppository. |
