CHECKDB failing to fix errors.

Hi,

I am running SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 4. We recently had a rather nasty corruption problem over several of our databases on our server. It primarily affected indexes and page allocation tables. As of yet, we have yet to identify the cause of this problem. We ran hardware diagnostics and no problems were returned, and nothing aside from the errors that alerted us to the issue in the first place were found in the event logs or SQL error logs.

DBCC CHECKDB was ran several times (we ran it on all DBs on the server just to be safe, several came up corrupted) and used that to repair the data, but very quickly new corruptions popped up.

However, this is not the extent of my bewilderment. Due to the need to get our server back online, a couple co-workers decided to detatch the databases and reinstall the SQL server, then reattatch the databases and try and repair them. I am not sure why this would have mattered but it seems to have prevented any new corruptions.

Anyway, while I was repairing the problem databases to bring them back online, one of them has been giving me a particular problem. Several indexes were pretty thoroughly trashed, giving over 1000 consistency errors. There were also around 25 or so allocation errors. I rebuilt all of the indexes to remove the consistency errors, however the allocation errors still remain and CHECKDB will not remove them. repair_allow_data_loss is the minimum repair level for the errors found by DBCC CHECKDB (PRODUCTION_CATEGORIZER repair_allow_data_loss).

As you can see, it is telling me that the errors cannot be repaired until other errors are corrected first, but there are no other errors! I cannot figure it out. The rest of our databases on the server are now clean, this is the only one that is not working. Does anyone have any suggestions before we restore to the last backup?

Hi,

from the description of the corruptions you experienced, you've hit a case that cannot be repaired (and I've confirmed this from looking at the SQL 2000 repair code). Each of the extents listed below has pages from several different indexes in them, even though they're supposed to only have pages from a single index (based on their entries in other allocation bitmaps). This case cannot be repaired and so you'll need to restore from your backups.

Question for you: why did you choose to repair in the first place instead of restoring from your backups?

Primarily for academic reasons. We are a small company with no real DBA (I myself am primarily a software developer), and outsourced IT that has a tendency to not respond to our calls in a reasonable amount of time. So essentially we are a bunch of novices when it comes to stuff like this, and since I had never dealt with data corruption before, it served as an exploration to
try out the various recovery options until our time frame ran out (which is why last night we restored the database, this was just a last ditch effort to try and understand what the hell happened).

Of course, there is also the problem that we only have weekly backups despite several people in the company recommending a higher frequency, so we wanted to repair what we could without losing a weeks worth of data.

Is that to tape or somesuch?

Because if so you could easily set up more frequent backups to disk on the server (including transaction or differential backups which will only backup what has changed, and thus are reasonably frugal on disk space, and then you would be reasonably safeguarded - e.g. until the whole machine is toast!)

Hi I'm having similar issue with Error 8905 after some corruption.. Below is the message from dbcc checkalloc(PRD) with no_infomsgs running on SQL 2000 with SP4 hotfix 2187.. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

1. Ensure you have good backup.
2. Check windows event log for disk related errors.
3. Call Microsoft support.

1. Backup running but my client been backing up corrupted db...
2. Changed hardware so not a problem anymore
3. Will Microsoft support really help? hmm ok will try...
