SQL is a nonprocedural programming language
Microsoft SQL Server is a DBMS DataBase Management System
MYSQL is a DBMS

and sql has an ansii standard.
It's implementation on any dbms will usually not conform strictly to the standard and will have extensions.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

I sometimes think everyone's lives would be easier if Microsoft had called it "MS DB Server" or something like that, instead of putting the word SQL in there.

MS SQL Server = "Microsoft Structured Query Language Server" ?
