i am taking a beginners course in database design.

why is normalization so important

I suspect the idea is to get you thinking about it rather than getting suggestions from a forum.

The last sentence gives you a clue about what to think about. It wants you to discuss the risks involved in not including users and thinking about how much cost would be involved in reducing that.

As a start an obvious issue is that you could end up with a product that doesn't really meet many users needs against the difficulty in getting sufficient users to respond truthfully.
