I am currently running SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition on Windows 2003. I want to upgrade the server to Windows 2008. How do you determine which version of Windows 2008 and SQL 2008 to run? I was thinking of running Windows 2008 64 bit R2 Enterprise and SQL 2008 R2 standard (64-bit) x64. Do you foresee any problems?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Diane

Which edition to run is dependent upon your requirements and what licenses you own. What do you require of the operating system? Have you compared the two editions of the OS on the Microsoft web site?

In other words, we can't answer this for you. It depends on YOUR requirements.

We use Enterprise edition for both the OS and SQL. But that's us. Your mileage will vary.

Thanks Tara. We have not purchased the licenses for Windows and SQL. We want to support 200 concurrent users on the system. Eventually, it would grow to 1000 concurrent users. Is it enough info to determine the type of OS and SQL?

Thanks.

Thanks Russell. The link is very helpful.

We decide to run Windows 2008 R2 64-bit Standard Edition and SQL 2008 R2 64-bit Standard Edition in virtual environment.

If you have this type of setup, did you run into any problems with SQL?

Thanks.

That's a perfectly valid setup.

You won't have problems because of those choices, as long as your VMs are properly configured, and the features you need are available in SE.
